The PP deputy and fourth secretary of the Bureau of Congress, Carmen Navarro, announced on Monday that her parliamentary group will register a non-legislative proposal in Congress to dedicate a day to promote the use of cash as the only means of payment.
In the framework of a conference in the Lower House on cash ‘as a safe and sustainable solution’ organised by the Denaria platform, the leader of the Popular Group said that the idea of this proposal is to raise awareness among citizens of the virtues of cash.
Among others, Navarro mentioned that this money allows the inclusion of rural areas where it is more difficult to pay with technological means. For this reason, she proposed dedicating a day to the use of cash so that people know what it means to have ‘cash in your wallet’.
The president of the Denaria platform, the veteran diplomat and former PP MP Javier Rupérez, then spoke, praising the fact that cash ensures the ‘autonomy’ and ‘freedom’ of citizens because it does not depend on electricity or electronic means to be used. He also stressed that cash allows spending to be controlled, is fast and is also safe from cybercrime.
"Dependence on digital payments makes us vulnerable. A system failure can paralyse the economy, while cash is immune to cyber-attacks and guarantees the financial autonomy of citizens," said the platform's president.

However, Rupérez regretted that there are still businesses that do not accept payment in cash, such as airlines or music festivals. He also criticised the fact that there are laws that are ‘against cash’, and as an example he cited the Housing Law, which he said prevents rent being paid in cash.
In turn, the president of Denaria denounced the fact that payment in cash is limited to 1,000 euros. In this sense, Rupérez urged the authorities to review the regulations and bring them into line with Europe, as the European Commission recommends that this limit should be 10,000 euros.
